The Bakers

(click to enlarge to readable size)

Drew this last year for Rob Jackson's Pasty anthology, and figure it's now safe to post it here. Seems wrong to draw something for someone then post the whole thing online before it's out. Anyroad, the whole comic is nice and should be purchased from him, on his site.

From my Dad -
Lovely strip, Jim, very distinctive of your approach. Description of Becket's Waiting for Godot would apply, if adapted: In this play nothing happens, twice [five times].

I got that neat formulation from the Guardian Short Stories podcasts: 'Philip Pullman reads 'The Beauties' by Anton Chekhov' -- and commented in an interview afterwards that that saying applied to Chekhov's story, and that the point of the short story wasn't in the plot or events but that the essence of the feel of a series of moments was extracted and distilled, like boiling rose petals for hours and skimming off the tiny quantity of oil.

I've never much liked short stories -- too much investment for too little return -- but that helped me to see the point.

So your stuff is doing something like that.
